Joe Gomez played a key role as Liverpool dominated West Ham and scored four set-pieces in the 5-2 win, which may lead to Jeremie Frimpong being moved into a winger role.Liverpool’s set-piece turnaround since the start of 2026 has been nothing short of remarkable.Since the beginning of the calendar year, the Reds have now scored eight goals from corners, free-kicks, throw-ins, etc, which is the most in the Premier League. Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images Speaking live to the press post-West Ham, Arne Slot, as he has done so often this season, commented on set-pieces and the impact Gomez had: “Playing with a right full-back that can also play as a centre-back also means you have aerial threats in – what I am saying for the 500th time – set pieces.”Arne Slot could use Jeremie Frimpong as a winger to keep Joe Gomez in the teamThe Liverpool manager also explained that his side probably didn’t deserve to be 3-0 up after 45 minutes against West Ham, but set pieces were crucial. He said: “The main thing to take is we scored three goals from set pieces.

That can make a big difference in the game, I don’t think 3-0 at half-time was a fair reflection of the run of play.“So many times we have been on the opposite side where we deserved so, so, so much more and then there was a set-piece goal conceded. I don’t think we deserved to be 3-0 up at half-time on open play.” Change my mind: Frimpong is now Liverpool’s best right winger He did more in 13 minutes vs West Ham than Salah did all game 😶 Photo Credit: Getty Images/Dan Mullan So, with it becoming pretty obvious that set-pieces are crucial to Liverpool’s improved form in the last few weeks, it probably means Slot will want to keep Gomez in the XI now that he is fit due to his height and natural heading ability. That does create something of a problem for Frimpong, however, who himself just returned from injury and looked sharp off the bench against West Ham.Frimpong’s pace has been called ‘crazy’, and given how much Slot values speed, he will also no doubt want to keep the Dutchman in the eleven.Well, the solution to this seems simple.

Just play the former Bayer Leverkusen defender as a right-winger moving forward. This would keep Gomez in the side and add more of a threat from set-pieces, which Slot clearly wants. It would also make Liverpool faster in the wide areas and more lethal from crosses, with the wing-back creating more problems for the Hammers’ backline than Mohamed Salah did during much of his time on the pitch. Of course, this would all depend on Gomez being able to stay fit, which he has struggled to do this season. But given Salah is now 10 Premier League games without a goal, it’s hard to imagine too many would complain about Frimpong starting as a forward in the coming weeks.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
