It is safe to say Florian Wirtz has not had the best start to life at Liverpool. The 22-year-old German joined from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for £116 million, with hype surrounding him as a young talent in the world of football. However, he has not shown the fans just yet exactly what he can do, as in his first appearances for the club, he has struggled to influence the game as expected for a player of his quality.Join our newsletter for news & smart analysis. It is difficult to come to the Premier League and adapt to a different style of play, especially at a club as important and big as Liverpool, so it is no wonder that Wirtz is not there just yet. What has not helped so far is the immense media criticism of the player because of the price tag attached to him, which has continued even when he has shown glimpses of his best attributes in creating the big chances.Photo by BURAK BASTURK/Middle East Images/AFP via Getty ImagesJoleon Lescott says Florian Wirtz’s performance vs Burnley was a worryBefore this last international break, there were games where you could see he was finding his rhythm, more specifically, the Chelsea game, where his instant impact was evident in creating a chance with a beautiful flick to Mohamed Salah.Arne Slot, despite the player being under the microscope of the press, has persisted in choosing him to either start or come off the bench to try and change the game.READ MORE: Germany star reveals what Florian Wirtz is doing behind the scenes to improve at LiverpoolIt has not worked in enough games, and Joleon Lescott recently spoke about the one that he felt was the biggest worry for him.The former Manchester City player pointed to Liverpool’s last-gasp win over Burnley as the game that worried him about Wirtz because of the German’s inability to create the openings he is known for.During an interview with The Mixer, Lescott explained: “Listen, we can’t judge him solely on the six games, seven games that he’s played in.

But should he have had an impact on one of those games? And for me it was the Burnley game.“I’m like if you’re an attacking player, forget the fee, and we need a goal.

I shouldn’t be taking you off. You should be the guy that then hopefully creates the opportunity.”Florian Wirtz was not the only player to have a poor performanceIt is understandable why this game was highlighted as a worry, given it was against a newly promoted team who are known to sit back and defend. However, the game itself was one in which every player had put in one of the dullest performances of the season.By no means was it the worst of this season; take your pick of the last three, and you have a strong argument, but to single out Wirtz specifically is unfair, given that other attacking players struggled with the low-block.The next game against Manchester United will be much more of a test of how he has become used to playing in the top-flight, looking at the opposition in front of Liverpool.
