Liverpool’s Champions League performance against Galatasaray was one of the worst under Arne Slot. The Reds looked very flat when they travelled to Turkey and lost 1-0 to the Super Lig club, with Victor Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty the game’s deciding factor. It was a difficult defeat to swallow as Liverpool looked out of it from minute one, and they were not able to recover, instead putting on a display that lacked energy and direction. This game was supposed to be a response to the Crystal Palace defeat from the Saturday before, but what happened was a continuation of the mistakes and lack of creative ideas from many in the squad.Photo by Serhat Cagdas/Anadolu via Getty ImagesWhat will happen against Chelsea is very much unknown, with Slot’s side not at their best and the Blues struggling with red cards and injuries ahead of the game.Wayne Rooney says Arne Slot should have received criticism for two position changes, like Ruben Amorim wouldAn issue on the European night was the number of changes to the usual positions of players, including Jeremie Frimpong playing as a right winger and Dominik Szoboszlai going back to right back. Both decisions Wayne Rooney was not a fan of, and he even made a comparison to Ruben Amorim of Manchester United. The ex-United and Everton player spoke on a clip from The Wayne Rooney Show about how placing the Hungarian and Dutchman in those positions was one of the reasons they performed badly, and that if Amorim had done the same thing he would be criticised.Rooney explained: “I thought they were really poor, I think a worry for me would be in them losing the game, it looked like they still had quite a bit of time left to go. He’s just put every attacking player left on the pitch and just said ‘Right go and figure it out’.“It could have got a lot worse for Liverpool during the game because of the amount of times they have given the ball away at the back, and losing it and getting broke on and Alisson obviously getting injured.“I think when you win the league like Arne Slot did the last season with Liverpool, sometimes some of the decisions you make may get overlooked.

I think his decision to play a midfield player at right-back and a right-back at right wing like for instance if that was Amorim at Manchester United, he would get absolutely slaughtered.”The criticism of Dominik Szoboszlai’s position is unfairIt may seem like something that the Portuguese coach would be criticised for, however, there is a clear difference between the two situations in the case of Szoboszlai. Many fans and supporters would agree that they do not want to see the 24-year-old playing on the right flank, but he had a very successful stint in that position when called upon to do so.If this happened in the case of United, Amorim would likely choose a player who is just unsuitable for the position, and he would play poorly.READ MORE: Arne Slot offered solution for how he can easily solve Liverpool’s midfield issueIt was not a shock to see the Hungarian at right-back, and in general, it was not solely his fault the team played poorly; although he may have given away the penalty, he was not any worse than anyone else playing in the shirt. If he had mainly used Frimpong’s positioning as the comparison, that would have been fair, as he has never really played that position for Liverpool, but to lump in the Hungarian with him is a completely different scenario. The lack of criticism for this decision is based on prior experience and performance rather than any sort of media bias or lack of criticism about the team, which has been constant over the past week.
