Liverpool supporters could be forgiven for overlooking the positives on what was another chastening afternoon of Premier League football on Saturday. The Reds lost for a third consecutive match, being beaten by a stoppage-time strike for the second time in succession in a league game.Nevertheless, there were some positives to take for Liverpool against Chelsea. As disappointing as some aspects of the performance were, it was not all bad.Perhaps the biggest of these was Giorgi Mamardashvili‘s display on his Premier League debut for the Reds.Mamardashvili looked assured and commanding after stepping in for the injured Alisson Becker, and could do nothing about either Chelsea goal.Having finally played for the first time in England’s top division, the Georgian took to social media on Saturday night to admit his pride at the performance.Photo by GLYN KIRK/AFP via Getty ImagesGiorgi Mamardashvili promises there’s more to comeIt has been a long wait for Liverpool fans to get a proper look at their new goalkeeper, but he has proven to be worth the wait.Mamardashvili has been compared to Gianluigi Donnarumma, and there were shades of the big Italian in his performance at Stamford Bridge.READ MORE: Daniel Sturridge explains in detail why Luis Diaz has been a ‘massive miss’ for Liverpool this seasonAlisson is set to miss around six weeks, giving an extended run to his understudy, and in a post on Instagram after late defeat at Chelsea, Mamardashvili admitted he was ‘living a childhood dream’ being given the chance to play for Liverpool.“The result wasn’t what we deserved, but every experience makes us stronger,” said the 25-year-old.
“Today I made my Premier League debut, living a childhood dream.“The first of many. Just trust the process.”Liverpool in safe hands with MamardashviliAmid the wreckage of another really poor result, Mamardashvili’s debut will give hope to Liverpool fans heading into the international break.Had the former Valencia keeper struggled at Chelsea, it would have added to the feeling that bad things are coming Liverpool’s way this season. However, Mamardashvili was arguably the Reds’ best player on the night, and will take confidence from the performance. The Liverpool defence, so heavily criticised this term, should also feel better about the man they have behind them for the next few weeks.
That could be big.It remains to be seen exactly how much game time Mamardashvili is afforded in the Premier League this season. But having come through one of its most difficult fixtures with credit in the bank, the future looks bright.
