It's now been 30 years since football fans stood on the famous Spion Kop terrace for the last time.

It was on April 30, 1994 when Anfield bade farewell to the Spion Kop, which in its heydey had held up 27,000 fans.

The legislation instigated by the 1989 Hillsborough disaster meant that all the stadiums in the top two divisions had to become all-seater and as a result, the Spion Kop was demolished in the summer of 1994, with a new ‘Kop Grandstand’ set to take its place.

LFC supporters had stood at the end of the ground by Walton Breck Road since 1892 and it was time to create a new stand made of cinder and brick, the ECHO previously reported.

Designed by architect Archibald Leitch, it was originally referred to as the "Walton Breck Bank" or "Oakfield Road Embankment," but later, a former sports editor of the Liverpool Post & ECHO said it had been termed the "Spion Kop."

The name was used in honour of the many Liverpudlians who died in the Battle of Spion Kop in the Boer war between January 23 and January 24, 1900.

For generations, football fans watched game after game at the famous stand - and now 30 years on, these images are bound to stir some memories.
