The 69th Ballon d’Or ceremony, staged at the historic Théâtre du Châtelet, kicked off at 8pm BST

Liverpool was well represented at tonight’s event.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz have all earned nominations for the main prize, while Alisson Becker is shortlisted for the Yashin Trophy and Arne Slot is in contention for Coach of the Year.

Despite 34 goals and 23 assists across 52 appearances in all competitions, it wasn’t enough for the Egyptian to claim.

Predictably, Ousmane Dembélé claimed the most prestigious individual award in the game.

He had an outstanding season at PSG, contributing 43 goal involvements in 44 Ligue 1 and Champions League games, helping the club secure a historic treble including their first Champions League title.

It was always felt like Mohamed Salah’s chances were sliced when the Reds were knocked out of the Champions League that painful night in March.

In a non-World Cup year, it was always going to be hard to look past the individuals of a treble-winning side.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan had earlier put out an emotional begging for his compatriot to finally receive his flowers.

“He reached the top and continued it for many years thanks to God first, and his talent, diligence and determination until he became a role model for all those looking for success, so is it time for football to do him justice and justice to him, who is in the hands of choosing the winner?”

“Our prayers and the prayers of all Egyptians and all Salah fans around the world that Salah will be the winner of the Golden Ball, to be the best crowning of the career of a great player who may not be repeated again in our Egyptian, Arab, African and even international football history.”
