The UEFA Champions League for the 2025-26 season will feature a new format including 36 teams competing in a league phase. This is the second season implementing the revamped system where all teams are in a single league table instead of traditional group stages. The draw, held on August 28, 2025 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, set the fixtures for each team to play eight matches, facing clubs from four different pots both home and away.

The league phase starts with matchdays from September 16-18, 2025, and continues through January 28, 2026, with the final matchday’s 18 games played simultaneously. The fixture schedule is as follows: Matchday 1 on Sept. 16-18, Matchday 2 on Sept. 30-Oct. 1, Matchday 3 on Oct. 21-22, Matchday 4 on Nov. 4-5, Matchday 5 on Nov. 25-26, Matchday 6 on Dec. 9-10, Matchday 7 on Jan. 20-21, and Matchday 8 on Jan. 28.

Unlike previous seasons where being in Pot 1 gave teams easier opponents, teams now play others from their own pots as well, so pot placement does not confer a competitive advantage. The top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, Liverpool, and Manchester City, were all poised for their eight fixtures against a range of teams determined by the draw.

Overall, this new league system seeks to increase match quality and competitiveness, with the league phase determining qualification for the knockout stages leading to the final scheduled for May 30, 2026, in Budapest, Hungary. The season follows Paris Saint-Germain’s dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the previous final.
