26-goal striker opens door to Liverpool move as wage demands slashed

Liverpool have had some elite number nines throughout their history but have lacked one in recent years.

Despite the Reds romping to the Premier League title and scoring more goals than any other team in the division, they don’t have an out-and-out striker.

When fit, which is not as often as anyone would like, Diogo Jota is the closest player to a conventional number nine at the club, while Darwin Nunez simply doesn’t have the output to deserve a regular spot in the team.

This leaves an area of vulnerability but also a position that Liverpool are so desperate to upgrade, with many big names being linked.

Options appear limited, and expensive for that matter, although Napoli’s Victor Osimhen may have just opened the door for a move to the Reds.

Goalscorers often come at the greatest cost as they are the ones that win you football games, meaning Liverpool will have to part ways with significantly more money than they already have done this summer.

Osimhen looked like a striker who would fit in nicely at Anfield, but his wage demands just seemed way too high and unrealistic for the Reds to be able to justify bringing him in.

However, according to Foot Mercato, the Nigerian has reduced his wage demands to just over £10m a year, which equated to around £200k a week.

This wage fits Liverpool’s structure a lot more than the €45m (£38.4m) that Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal offered him, with the 26-year-old said to be keen to play for a club in Europe.

To put this into context, Darwin Nunez is reportedly on around £160k per week, so with the Uruguayan set to leave, this will free up almost the same amount of weekly cash.

Napoli are also interested in the 25-year-old so a swap deal could be possible, especially as both players are valued at around the £60m mark.

Osimhen is known to be one of Europe’s best goalscorers, but after playing in Turkey for a season, question marks have been raised about his desire to play at the top level.

However, during his time at Napoli he showed his capabilities on the biggest stages, suggesting it is not as risky as many may think.

Either way, any of the Reds’ four current options will cost a pretty penny and all have some level of risk behind them, although Osimhen’s wage demands may indicate that he is ready to take the next step in his career.
