3 things Liverpool must do in transfer window after signing Hugo Ekitike

A deal for Liverpool to sign Hugo Ekitike is all but done as the Reds close in on their second $100 million-plus player of the summer.

The Reds committed a huge sum of money to the signing of Florian Wirtz last month, and Ekitike will take Liverpool's summer spend to well over $300 million, after the arrivals of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool has been lauded for its transfer activity over the past decade or so, and this window could end up going down as an all-timer if the players signed go on to have the desired impact.

The club still has work to do in the window beyond the signing of Ekitike though, and, by our reckoning, these are the three biggest priorities...

Sign a center-back

Jarell Quansah's exit brought in the biggest fee of the window for Liverpool, but his move to Bayer Leverkusen has left Arne Slot with just three senior center-backs.

Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk were outstanding last season, and Joe Gomez filled in impressively when called upon, but Gomez has not played competitively in nearly six months after his campaign was ended by a hamstring injury in February.

Liverpool simply can't afford to go into the season without signing a fourth center-back — it would just be too risky

The Marc Guehi chat appears to have gone quiet but there is still plenty of time left in the window for that deal to come to fruition.

Trim the squad

Liverpool has raised funds with the sales of Quansah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher, but the big-ticket for-sale players remain on Merseyside, with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott still on the Reds' books.

Nunez seems like the most likely player to leave, amid the impending arrival of Ekitike, while Diaz is clearly keen to move on amid interest from Bayern Munich.

Elliott's lack of game time last season led to him considering his future on Merseyside, and the writing appears to be on the wall for him following the arrivals of Frimpong and Wirtz

Make decisions on youngsters

There could also be money to be made with the sales of younger players like Ben Doak and Tyler Morton, with both players probably now at the stage of their careers when they should be looking to move on permanently.

There are also decisions to be made on youngsters like Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha

Ngumoha is still just 16 so his development is likely to continue in the Reds' academy, but Liverpool might consider whether to send Nyoni, 18, out on loan.

Decisions could also be taken on Jayden Danns and Stefan Bajcetic, both of whom were not included in Slot's squad for the two-game pre-season tour of Asia.
