It was just never meant to be for the Guinea international at Liverpool.

When the Reds signed Naby Keita from RB Leipzig in 2018 for what was their then-club record fee of £48m, the future looked exciting.

Known for his low centre of gravity and ball-carrying ability, he looked like he would be the perfect player under Jurgen Klopp.

However, injury after injury, his time at Anfield never really went to plan and he failed to hit the heights that he was reaching in the Bundesliga, making him one of the worst transfers of the Klopp era.

Now, two years on from the day he announced his Liverpool departure, Keita is still playing aged 30, but what has he been up to since?

Leaving on a free transfer, Keita returned to the Bundesliga to play for Werder Bremen, a move that, at the time, looked good for him.

It also came as a surprise to many given how highly-rated he was in the Bundesliga before joining Liverpool, with it looking like an absolute steal.

However, it actually turned into a nightmare decision as not only did injuries limit him to just five appearances, but Keita ended up being frozen out from the first-team squad after reportedly refusing to board the team bus for an away game against Bayer Leverkusen.

He was given a hefty fine and never played for Werder Bremen again, something that severely impacted his reputation and future opportunities.

After 11 months without playing a game, ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, who manages Hungarian side Ferencvaros, handed Keita a ‘get out of jail free’ card and signed him on loan in January 2024.

Keita’s move to Ferencvaros surprised many, although he hit the ground running and got his career back on track.

The Guinea international became a key player for the Hungarian side and helped inspire them to their seventh league title in a row, rarely missing a game through injury.

Whether he signs for Ferencvaros permanently is yet to be seen, but it is safe to say Keita has had a rather eventful two years since departing Liverpool, although it is still a shame to see his career end on a bit of a whimper.
