Trent Alexander-Arnold has become one of many cornerstones of Liverpool’s recent success, since having his breakthrough moment into the first-team setup at eighteen, but the defender has recently confirmed that his footballing future lies elsewhere, beyond the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign.

After months of speculation over his contract, Alexander-Arnold has decided to bring an end to a twenty-year stay at the club, during which he has won two Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

He’s won it all for his boyhood club.

While Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk committed their long-term futures to Liverpool just last month, Alexander-Arnold has chosen a different path, in favour of a move to Real Madrid.

As Liverpool prepare for life after Trent Alexander-Arnold, we have decided to take a look at five right-backs who the Reds could target to replace him.

Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as a contender to replace Alexander Arnold.

The Bayer Leverkusen defender has impressed with his blistering pace, attacking intent and defensive work under former Liverpool man, Xabi Alonso, marking him as one of Europe’s standout full-backs.

Frimpong’s ability to operate as a traditional right-back and as a wing-back offers tactical flexibility, something that Arne Slot values highly in his Liverpool setup.

There will be concerns over the Reds’ losing Alexander-Arnold’s creativity from right-back, but Frimpong’s output in the Bundesliga reflects a similar profile to their current defender so he could well be seen as a ready-made replacement.

Liverpool have held a long interest in the Dutch international, who came through the ranks at Manchester City as a youth prospect, but would need to pay his reported £34million release clause to get him out of Leverkusen, this summer.

TINO LIVRAMENTOJames Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images.

Tino Livramento could be seen as a solution to Liverpool’s future without their world-class talent.

The Reds have reportedly expressed an interest in the current Newcastle United right-back and have shown an appreciation towards his performances.

Livramento offers versatility in defence with the ability to play both full-back positions and would be seen as an ideal candidate, given his Premier League experience at such a young age.

While he may not possess the same level of creativity as Trent Alexander-Arnold, his ceiling remains high and under the right guidance, he could evolve into a dependable presence for the Reds.

Newcastle acquired Livramento from Southampton for £32million back in 2023 and has become a reliable asset, meaning any departure would likely bring an increase to their asking price.

Not to mention that Chelsea currently hold a sell-on and buy-back clause, meaning Liverpool would need to act fast if they decide that Tino Livramento is their man.

GIVAIRO READAlamy.

Feyenoord’s Givairo Read is a player who Arne Slot knows well.

The Liverpool boss handed the right-back a professional debut in the Eredivise, at just sixteen-years old in 2023 and has since saw the young talent become a first-team regular.

Making twenty-three appearances this season, Read has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders, impressing with his perfomances and contributing to one goal alongside seven assists.

When Read was quizzed on his favourite Premier League clubs, specifically Manchester United or Manchester City, he openly expressed a love towards Liverpool.

“Liverpool, for sure!

Nothing else, no one else.”

His ability to operate on both defensive flanks and an already familiarity with Arne Slot’s system make the Feyenoord defender a compelling candidate, though age could work against him, being just eighteen.

Liverpool may opt for a more experienced figure to fill the void of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

DENZEL DUMFRIESMarco Luzzani/Getty Images.

Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries is a viable option to become the Reds’ new right-back this summer.

The Dutch connection to manager Arne Slot, suggests that he wouldn’t take too long to adapt to his system, whilst providing defensive solidity and valuable experience to the Liverpool ranks.

Dumfries also provides attacking strength that is critical towards following in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the Reds set to lose his creativity from right-back.

At Inter Milan and for the Netherlands, the defender offers the kind of maturity and reliability, having experienced some of Europe’s greatest competitions, such as the Serie A in Italy, Champions League and the World Cup on an international level.

The only stumbling block for any deal would be that Denzel Dumfries most recently committed his future to Inter Milan until 2028, but remains on the radar of many top clubs, including Liverpool and rivals, Manchester United.

VANDERSONGetty Images.

Brazil international Vanderson has emerged as a potential successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back, currently of AS Monaco in Ligue 1, still only twenty-three and can help plug the gap that Alexander-Arnold will ultimately leave.

Vanderson excels as an attacking right-back but also someone who isn’t against resorting back to his defensive duties, with the ability to retain possession, one of his many strengths.

For AS Monaco this season, the Brazilian has scored once and provided three assists in twenty-seven appearances and has seen himself grow into one of the world’s top young prospects.

If Liverpool are to push for the signing of Vanderson, they will be in competition with three of their Premier League rivals in Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham and while the defender is under contract until 2028, the French outfit would sell for an appropriate price.

The Reds would have to offer in the region of £25-30million to secure his services.

For Liverpool, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold is not just about finding a new right-back, but filling a void left by a player who has redefined the role in the modern era.

Conor Bradley has excelled and proved that he can become Liverpool’s first-choice option, but injury issues have now circulated doubt over that dream becoming a reality.

Whoever the club may pursue as Alexander-Arnold’s long-term successor, they must find a player capable of blending creativity with defensive responsibilities to ensure they maintain a solid foundation for the club’s long-term future under Arne Slot.
