Crystal Palace pulled off one of the biggest shocks in English football in some years after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

The south London side secured their first piece of major silverware ever after a 1-0 win at Wembley Stadium against Pep Guardiola’s side as Palace completed one of the storylines of the season in the English capital.

Rumoured Liverpool target Adam Wharton started for Palace and once again excelled as the England international received a standing ovation from supporters after coming off with an injury in the final moments of the match, with the midfielder enjoying one of the best games of his career to date.

And for Liverpool, Wharton’s performance in the FA Cup final could inspire the Reds to make a move for the former Blackburn Rovers star in the summer transfer window.

The FA Cup final is one of the biggest games of the season in the English football calendar, yet Wharton made the occasion look like any other Palace match, with the midfielder remaining as calm and as cool as ever.

With Jan Molby urging Liverpool to sign Wharton this summer, the £60m-rated Eagles star will see his stock rise considerably after Saturday’s historic win for Palace, with the midfielder playing a huge role in Oliver Glasner’s side claiming their first piece of major silverware.

Indeed, Liverpool’s need for a new central midfielder coupled with rumours that Harvey Elliott could leave Anfield this summer could lead to Arne Slot’s side making an honest attempt to sign Wharton over the window.

And after this weekend’s performance against City, Liverpool will be more than confident that Wharton can do a job in the midfield, with the 21-year-old ready for the next step in his career at one of the biggest clubs in the country.

Already valued at £60m, Wharton’s asking price could well exceed £100m after Palace’s success in the FA Cup and subsequent qualification for next season’s UEFA Europa League, with the midfielder’s reputation as high as it has ever been.

As a result, though, Liverpool could end up having to break their club transfer record to bring Wharton to Anfield, a reality that could become true if the temptation to sign the 21-year-old continues to grow as the summer progresses.

It’s clear that Wharton is favoured at Liverpool, and Saturday’s masterclass against City will only motivate the Reds to make a real move for the youngster once the window opens for business in the coming weeks.
