‘No chance!’ – Jamie Carragher and Peter Schmeichel completely disagree over Chelsea claim Published October 2, 2025 12:46am Updated October 2, 2025 12:47am Ex-Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher (Picture: CBS Sports) Jamie Carragher put Peter Schmeichel on the spot during CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage with a question about Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes. Chelsea have only taken one point from their last two games, suffering back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Brighton before Tuesday’s Champions League win over Benfica.

Carragher was keen to hear Premier League legend Schmeichel’s take on the goalkeeper situation at Stamford Bridge but could not have disagreed more with his response. ‘Peter, you famously signed for Manchester United and were a big difference to them going on to win the Premier League,’ Carragher said on CBS Sports. ‘Do you think Chelsea can win the league with Robert Sanchez in goal?’ After a brief pause, Schmeichel responded: ‘Erm yes, and better defenders.’ But Carragher immediately interjected, saying: ‘No chance Peter, no chance!’ After the show’s host Kate Abdo said goodbye to Schmeichel, who was at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea’s win over Benfica, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards told Carragher: ‘You put him on the spot there, didn’t you? He didn’t say it with conviction did he!’ Peter Schmeichel was put on the spot by Jamie Carragher (Picture: Getty) In a recent column for The Telegraph, Liverpool legend Carragher slammed Chelsea’s decision not to replace Sanchez during the summer transfer window. ‘The glaring flaws last season were in goal and at centre-half,’ he said. ‘Despite 12 new arrivals over the summer, those areas remain the Achilles’ heel. ‘Chelsea were linked with AC Milan’s French keeper Mike Maignan, but the message was they were not prepared to pay more than £12m.

He could have been a transformative signing for them. ‘Rather than focus on positions in need of urgent attention, Chelsea appear to be obsessed with collecting wingers.’ Chelsea will look to clinch their first Premier League win in over a month this weekend when Premier League champions Liverpool visit Stamford Bridge.
