Liverpool came quickly out of the blocks against Everton at Anfield on Saturday as they raced into a 2-0 lead.

The Reds were looking to make it five wins from five after a rip-roaring start to the season has seen them shoot to the top of the table.

Everton are never an easy prospect for Liverpool, though, and with David Moyes’ side coming into the game in sixth-place, it looked like a difficult game in waiting.

But Liverpool made light of those predictions early on, as Ryan Gravenberch scored a sensational goal inside 10 minutes.

And the Reds were soon further ahead, when Hugo Ekitike slotted through Jordan Pickford’s legs on his first Merseyside Derby appearance.

It was a super finish from Ekitike, who registered his fourth goal in a Liverpool shirt.

And watching on for BBC Sport, former Reds defender Stephen Warnock said the Frenchman is getting better all the time.

After a blistering start and three goals in his first three Liverpool appearances, Ekitike was without a goal in his last three.

But the 23-year-old put an end to any whisperings of a drought beginning to set in by racing onto Gravenberch’s pass and slotting home.

And according to Warnock, it was the cherry on what was a very good first-half performance from Ekitike.

“Hugo Ekitike is just getting better and better,” said the former full-back.

“When he gets on the ball, he is a danger and he has been so impressive in his short time at Liverpool.

“It’s a really smart finish, quick touch and he passes it into the bottom corner.

Jordan Pickford doesn’t stand a chance of getting anywhere near it and Liverpool look very comfortable.”

There has been plenty of talk ever since Alexander Isak arrived at Liverpool that Ekitike might be set for a spell on the bench.

That was reinforced on Wednesday, when the former Eintracht Frankfurt man was dropped to the bench for Isak’s first appearance as a Liverpool player.

There is certainly no question that Ekitike and Isak can play together, but there feels to be a desire from the media to create a bit of a rivalry between the two.

That is unlikely to be the case behind closed doors, but it will still do Ekitike the world of good to get himself a goal while Isak watches on.

And what a good goal it was too.
