AC Milan are 'considering the possibility of signing Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren' as they look to close the gap between themselves and the top of the Serie A table.

Milan are set to overhaul their squad this summer after a disappointing fifth-placed finish last season, and Lovren is said to be on their list of defensive targets.

The 29-year-old Croatian - despite labelling himself as 'one of the best defenders in the world' - has dropped down the pecking order at Liverpool and could leave.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, AC are 'probing' Lovren to see how much he would cost in terms of transfer fees and wages.

Lovren played 18 times in all competitions for Liverpool last season, 13 of which coming in the Premier League.

He was an unused substitute in the Reds' Champions League final victory over Tottenham, but has since played twice for his country this week.

AC Milan are set to lose Cristian Zapata on a free transfer, and there are injury worries surrounding Mattia Caldara, meaning centre back is a problem position for the Serie A side.
