Ally McCoist has voiced his amazement at the amount of money that Chelsea have garnered in player sales this summer compared to the total spending of both Tottenham and Man United.

Chelsea have had yet another busy summer window with Enzo Maresca overseeing an overhaul of his attacking options despite a relatively successful 2024/25 campaign.

The likes of Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho and Jorrel Hato have been some of the club’s most expensive incomings over the last few months, while Joao Pedro joined Chelsea from Brighton for around £60million [BBC].

Maresca has also moved to allow a number of first-team players and those on the fringes of his squad to depart ahead of the new season, with their strength in depth meaning a lot of them will not be missed regardless.

The most high-profile exits included Noni Nadueke, who moved to Arsenal, AC Milan buying Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix joining Al-Nassr, but their total outgoings added up to a seriously high amount that has blown other clubs’ spending on new players out of the water, and after the big-money late loan-to-buy exit of Nicolas Jackson allowed them to register a profit on the window.

Chelsea became the first Premier League club to recoup more than £300million from sales in one window this summer, after they had already surpassed their previous highest total of £215.9m from the summer of 2023.

Jeff Stelling revealed that statistic to pundit Ally McCoist live on talkSPORT on Tuesday (2 September), and the ex-Rangers star could not believe their figures when compared to how much both Man United and Tottenham have spent throughout the window, saying: “Isn’t it amazing, out of all those stats that you gave us Jeff, that Chelsea have recouped just about double what Manchester United and Spurs have spent, really, which is incredible.

Chelsea were the second-biggest spenders throughout the summer window, according to the BBC, but their conveyor belt of outgoings means that they have actually ended with a net spend of -£3m.

Despite that being one of the lowest in the top-flight, they still need to improve on last season’s fourth-placed finish to show that there is method to their madness and they are on the right path to becoming a genuine title challenger.

Maresca’s side have started the 2025/26 campaign well, with two wins and a draw from their first three league games, but there is now sense that they are somewhat short up-front following Liam Delap‘s hamstring injury.

They need to be able to justify the overhaul that has gone on within Maresca’s squad this season by impressing on all fronts, not just the Premier League, but one injury to Joao Pedro and they could be in trouble, which proves that there has been a lack of foresight and planning despite their impressive sales record.
