'Absurd': 34-year-old hits back at criticism of 'great' Liverpool teammate

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has hit back at criticism aimed at Thiago this season. The midfielder hasn’t had an easy start to life in England.

Adrian gave an interview to Marca this week where the subject of Thiago came up. The outlet wanted the 34-year-old’s thoughts on criticism aimed at his teammate.

Well, Adrian hit back at it in no uncertain terms.

“Thiago is receiving absurd criticism,” he said. “He has more than demonstrated what a great player he is and he will also prove it at Liverpool.

“He comes from a different league, where he plays at a different pace, he had several injuries, COVID-19 – that makes adaptation difficult and, on top of that, the team has not been at his level.”

Thiago received plenty of criticism on his return to the side in December. He struggled for form and often looked out of place, with Liverpool’s form making things look particularly bad.

What RTK has to say

Adrian is absolutely right, of course. The criticism of Thiago was always ridiculous, all things considered.

He made one start before a long-term injury took him out of the team for months. On his return, everything was different.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were gone, with Joel Matip soon to follow. Fabinho – who was supposed to form a midfield partnership with Thiago – was now in defence.

Liverpool also couldn’t string two good performances together, let alone wins. It was a near-impossible situation for a new player.

Fortunately, things have turned around since. Thiago is currently playing well and his introduction against Real Madrid last night highlighted that.

Liverpool were a lot more secure and controlled once he arrived. No, things weren’t perfect – but the Reds undoubtedly look better with Thiago in midfield.

Now, if we could only get Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho in the same midfield, things might actually look very strong.

Hopefully, we don’t have to wait until next season to see that.
