Former Liverpool man Adam Lallana has today announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37, bringing to a close a remarkable 19-year career that saw him achieve nearly  every  club honour available in the game.

For Liverpool fans, it’s a reminder at just how fast the times change, as the now 37-year-old was a key cog of Jurgen Klopp’s early tenure.

The former England midfielder, who earned 34 caps for his country, confirmed the decision through an emotional statement on social media, expressing “an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride” as he reflected on his journey.

When Liverpool signed Lallana from Southampton for £25 million in the summer of 2014, many questioned whether the fee represented value for money.

Under Brendan Rodgers, the versatile midfielder showed glimpses of his quality with 41 appearances and six goals in his debut season, but it was the arrival of Jurgen Klopp in October 2015 that now ensures his name is always remembered on Merseyside.

“Adam was, from the first second, important [to me],” Klopp revealed in back 2016.

“Since we worked together it’s always getting better – it’s good.”

“He can play different positions, he’s quick, he’s mentally strong, he’s a smart player?

[He is] very important for the team – as a person and as a player.”

The midfielder was part of the squad that reached back-to-back Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, coming on as a substitute in the heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid in Kyiv before being on the bench when Liverpool lifted their sixth European Cup with victory over Tottenham in Madrid.

He also collected winners’ medals in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as a Premier League winner’s medal in 2020.

Southampton have now officially confirmed that Lallana will be first team coach for the club in the Championship next season.

Adam Lallana first stepped into a player-coach position under interim boss Simon Rusk in April 2025, supporting the first team for the final games Premier League fixtures of the season.

Having remained on the backroom staff through the close of the 2024–25 campaign, he has effectively spent three months as a de facto coach at St Mary’s anyway.

In the Championship, he will resume his role as first-team coach, working alongside Carl Martin, with whom he partnered last season.

He links up with Will Still’s new-look management team.
