Angelo Gabriel wasn’t even born the last time Santos won the Brazilian Serie A title, all the way back in 2004.

But, with arguably the most exciting teenager in the country rising through the ranks at a rate of knots, those long-suffering Peixe supporters at least have something to look forward to.

That’s if Gabriel is not spirited away by one of those talent-spotting megaclubs on the other side of the Atlantic, of course.

Speaking in March, Santos sporting director Jorge Andrade admitted that Liverpool, amongst others, had already expressed their interest in the 16-year-old striker.

“Angelo is a boy who has been growing, developing and (the scouts) are certainly watching him. Not only Liverpool but other teams in the European market as well,” Andrade said, via UOL.

On Tuesday night, Gabriel became the youngest Copa Libertadores goalscorer in the competition’s history, shattering a 59-year-old record with a predatory finish at the far post during a 3-1 victory over San Lorenzo.

The resultant celebration was borne out of blessed relief, as well as pure, unfiltered joy.

Gabriel’s heart would have been fluttering that little bit faster after nearly skying his history-breaking effort over the crossbar.

Neymar, Gabriel Barbosa, Robinho, Rodrygo Goes and the indefatigable Pele all made their name at Santos and it seems only a matter of time before Angelo Gabriel is following in their gilded footsteps.

“My first goal as a professional, becoming the youngest player to score in the history of Libertadores. I just have to thank God for this achievement! The first is never forgotten!” Gabriel beamed at full-time.

It certainly won’t be forgotten. Neither by Gabriel nor by one of the most historic clubs in the whole of South America.
