It has been a frenetic week for Liverpool fans following the club’s transfer business.
Two blockbuster deals on the brink of completion.
First, German maestro Florian Wirtz arrived in England on Thursday to undergo a medical ahead of his record-breaking £116 million switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield.
He is expected to be announced by the Anfield club on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Milos Kerkez is in essence also a Liverpool player with Fabrizio Romano confirming the “here we go” stage of his move.
Amid the excitement, the departing Jarell Quansah’s sale to Bayer Leverkusen for around £30 million remains a key subplot, freeing up funds for Slot’s ambitious rebuild and ensuring defensive reinforcements become a priority.
And while we exclusively revealed since March that Marc Guehi is high on the list to reinforce the backline, the club is doing their homework across Europe.
Reliable journalist Duncan Castles, speaking on the Transfers Podcast, has revealed that Liverpool have made “direct contact” with Ajax defender Jorrel Hato – with a summer move in mind.
The reporter explained that the Reds have already made contact with the 19-year-old, and that Ajax are aware of the talks but will not sell cheaply:
“What I can tell you is that there has been direct contact between Liverpool and Jorrel Hato over joining the Premier League champions,” Castles began.
“Those conversations have taken place with the knowledge of Ajax, who are open to selling the player.”
“I’m told from the Ajax end that the pricing on the player is going to be very high this summer.”
He adds that Hato would have been a lot cheaper last summer, and that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea are also “seriously interested
“Basically, the top European clubs missed an opportunity last summer when Ajax were struggling both on and off the pitch financially.”
“Where Hato could have been picked up on a far cheaper deal with a potential buy and loan back [agreement] to Ajax – but nobody took on that opportunity.”
“We now have a situation where Liverpool are looking at the player, Arsenal , and Chelsea also seriously interested.”
The 19-year-old was seen in the stands during Liverpool’s 4-1 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town in January 2025, drawing considerable attention from fans and commentators who speculated about a possible winter transfer.
Images of Hato seated in the Main Stand quickly fueled rumors that Liverpool were lining up a move for the Dutch international defender.
However, it was later clarified that Hato’s visit to Merseyside was arranged by his compatriot and Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, rather than being linked to any official transfer talks with the club.
But it seems that there is definitely interest from Liverpool despite the false alarm in January.
