Alan Shearer believes Liverpool could effectively win the title with two further signings(Image: DeFodi Images, DeFodi Images via Getty Images)Alan Shearer has praised Hugo Ekitike's explosive beginning at Liverpool.
But the Premier League legend believes the reigning champions still require a centre-back to boost their prospects of defending the title.
Ekitike, who has netted three goals in three appearances since arriving at Liverpool for an initial £69m, is looking to overshadow Viktor Gyokeres against Arsenal at Anfield today (Sunday, August 31) in the clash of recently signed forwards.
Shearer, the Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer, has been impressed by Ekitike, who could yet be joined on Merseyside by wantaway Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

But the Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers legend believes the Reds need to push through a deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.
Betfair Ambassador Shearer commented: "Ekitike has made a wonderful start, certainly better than even he would have imagined.
"He's got three in three, I've been really impressed with him but it remains to be seen how regular he will play if they get the player they want in Alexander Isak.
They might shift him to another position but you can't argue with his record to date.
"Liverpool need another centre-half, Marc Guehi springs to mind but because of departures and also tragic circumstances, they need another forward as well.
"From a selfish point of view that wouldn't be Isak but I understand why they're looking at him because he's good.
If they land Guehi and Isak, I guess it might be over for everyone."
Shearer ia also full of admiration for Arsenal's new boy Gyokeres after his two-goal performance in the 5-0 thrashing of Leeds United, even though he faces a different challenge this afternoon against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
And the former England captain insists the Gunners must utilise the robust Swede's strengths to maximise his potential - especially in the absence of the injured Bukayo Saka, reports the Mirror.
Shearer added: "Gyokeres will have found it frustrating in the first match against Manchester United.
Sometimes pass, pass, pass won't benefit him but you can't take away what Saka is good at or Eberechi Eze, so you need to find the balance."
Transfer deadline day is almost upon us and Liverpool still have business to do.
Liverpool remain interested in a deal for the Swede.
Meanwhile, Marc Guehi has been a player of interest all summer and Liverpool could still launch a last-minute deal for the Crystal Palace defender.
