Arne Slot and Richard Hughes have spent over £400million on attempting to improve their first-team squad this summer, with players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak choosing to make the switch to Anfield.
One thing the 2025-26 summer transfer window has shown fans is that if players kick up enough of a fuss, they’re likely to get their move.

Indeed, both Newcastle and Brentford ended up getting decent fees for their wantaway stars, but in reality, they’d have probably preferred to keep them around for another season or two.
And, while discussing the transfers of Isak and Wissa on the Stick to Football Podcast, Alan Shearer gave his opinion on what could end up happening to football now that both these players have got their moves.
“Unfortunately, I think because of what’s happened with Isak and what’s happened with Wissa, then you will see more [players refusing to play],” Shearer said.
“I don’t like it, I don’t think any fan likes it, and I can’t say because of the Isak situation.
I also have to mention the Wissa situation and him going to Newcastle, I don’t like what the players have done.
“It’s not a good look for football, but unfortunately, I think because of those two, getting their moves, particularly the Isak one, because that’s been more high profile than anything I can ever remember, then players will look at that and think if he or they did it, then I can do it.”
Although Isak has only just arrived at Anfield, he’s already gone away as he’s set to represent his national team.
Now that the transfer window is closed, it’ll give Slot some time to have a look over the Reds’ first three Premier League games of the season and have a think about where they can improve.
