The Alexander Isak situation at Newcastle has taken an interesting turn amid interest from Liverpool.

Club executives have told Newcastle United they are willing to pay around £120 million (€139 m) for the 25-year-old striker, a fee that would eclipse the British-record deal already agreed for Florian Wirtz.

While no formal bid has been filed, the Merseyside approach has been described as concrete.

Manager Eddie Howe insists Isak is “irreplaceable” and expects him to stay, but admits he cannot give “100 percent clarity” on any player’s future. The Magpies value the Swede at £150 m and have rebuffed Liverpool’s enquiry.

Tellingly, Howe sent Isak home before Saturday’s 4-0 friendly defeat to Celtic to shield him from mounting speculation, acknowledging that the talk had “affected” the player

But it would seem that the English manager is not telling us everything that is happening behind the scenes with the Swede.

According to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, Alexander Isak is now unsettled at St James’ Park due to all the interest in him.

Additionally, the high-paying contract he was promised 12 months ago has not materialized due to all the changes in Newcastle management over the last few months – and the player’s agent, Gonzalo Gaitán, is reportedly insulted at this development:

“With Liverpool, and others, circling Isak, the pressure on them has been building,” Edwards wrote.

“Of course, the player has been unsettled.

Isak had been promised a new contract by former co-owner Amanda Staveley in 2024.”

“However, [Paul] Mitchell, who left the club last month, decided not to open those talks as Isak had more than three years left on his current deal and the club’s PSR position made it difficult.”

“This led to acrimony, and the player’s agent felt insulted.”

This comes after Gaitán confirmed that his client is actively looking for the “next step”, saying to a Saudi Arabian newspaper:

“We are already studying and analyzing all options, and we may be close to finalizing the next step for the player, without revealing further details about Isak’s transfer or his stay with the Magpies.”

Sporting director Richard Hughes has long admired Isak and retains strong personal ties with Howe, easing dialogue between the clubs.

Darwin Núñez’s future remains uncertain amid Serie A and Saudi interest, while Luis Diaz could attract an €80 m bid from Bayern Munich.

Either exit would free wages and funds for a second marquee forward.
