Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy has hailed Liverpool's perfect start to the Premier League season as a 'really good sign', despite the Reds not yet hitting top form.

The Merseyside giants have racked up five wins from five games in the top flight, including a victory over local rivals Everton, to sit at the summit of the table with a six-point cushion.

The Reds' previous triumphs against Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal, and Burnley were followed by a hard-fought win in the first Merseyside derby of the season at Anfield.

Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike in the first half sealed the deal, despite Idrissa Gueye pulling one back for Everton after the break.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Murphy noted that while none of Liverpool's performances could be classified as vintage, this isn't necessarily a negative.

"There's good signs, because in most matches they've had great moments," the ex-Liverpool midfielder said.

However, Murphy did flag: "I think in midweek (against Atletico Madrid) they were really good bar the little spell in the second-half – today (against Everton) the more obvious thing was the fatigue.

So to win five our of five without playing at your best is a phenomenal start for them and actually is a really good sign."

Alongside Murphy for the highlights show was Everton supporter Wayne Rooney.

Michael Keane can't get back, [James] Tarkowski isn't quick enough to cover.

"Just here, that allows Ekitike to get his shot off and it is a fantastic finish - it makes it very difficult for Everton to get back into the game."

Liverpool take a brief break from Premier League duties with a Carabao Cup third round clash against Championship side Southampton this coming Tuesday, September 23.

Then they return to their pursuit of back-to-back titles with a journey to Selhurst Park to meet Crystal Palace next weekend – the last team to beat Slot's men, on penalties in last month's Community Shield.

Alongside Liverpool, the Eagles remain the only other undefeated outfit in England's top division this campaign after Chelsea lost to Manchester United on Saturday evening.
