Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk shared a defiant update on social media that drew a reaction from striker duo Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

Liverpool are preparing for their first Champions League outing against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on 17 September.

The tough battle against Diego Simeone’s side comes just days after Mohamed Salah’s late winner against Burnley in the Premier League.

Despite some scrutiny over performances on the pitch, Arne Slot’s side have maintained a perfect record to defend their title.

One key player in their run so far is Van Dijk, who has been impressive for Liverpool since the start of the season.

He remains a crucial part of the side and has now shared a photo ahead of their return to European football, signalling confidence ahead of the big fixture.

The Liverpool captain posted pictures on Instagram of himself alongside Alisson as the two kept another clean sheet against Burnley, before shifting focus to the Champions League.

The Dutchman has continued his impeccable form into the new season, with Van Dijk winning all aerial duels against Burnley, a feat he has completed for just the third time in his career.

His performances last year were also recognised in recent weeks as Van Dijk was awarded a place in the PFA Team of the Year, alongside teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah.

After a disappointing campaign in the Champions League last year that ended with Liverpool’s round-of-16 exit to PSG, he seems determined to lead the side further this season.

With the Dutchman turning 34 over the summer and Ibrahima Konate’s uncertain future, Liverpool were close to bringing in Marc Guehi, before a deal collapsed on deadline day.

Now, the Reds face even more competition as Football Insider revealed Chelsea have also joined the race to sign Guehi.

The Englishman has less than 12 months left on his deal, and whether he is available for a cut-price deal in January or a free transfer in the summer, several clubs are now vying for his signature.
