Image Credits: Imago ImagesAlexander Isak returned to competitive football for the first time since May, making a substitute appearance as Sweden suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Kosovo in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday night in Pristina.
The 25-year-old, who completed his £125 million British record transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool on deadline day, came off the bench in the 72nd minute, replacing Anthony Elanga with Sweden already trailing by two goals.
This marked Isak’s first competitive match since May 25, when he last featured for Newcastle United.Isak’s absence from football had been prolonged due to his controversial transfer pursuit.
The Swedish international had refused to participate in Newcastle’s pre-season activities and missed the opening three Premier League matches of the new campaign while pushing for his move to Anfield.
Speaking to the Swedish media after post-match, Isak suggested that reports are not painting then full picture
“Not everyone has the full picture, but that’s something for another day,” Isak said as the BBC relay.
“I can’t control everything that’s said or written
But I’m happy that I became a Liverpool player.”
He added that he is happy to be playing regular football again:
“It’s great that everything was settled before the camp and that I could focus on playing football again,” Isak said.
“It’s been a fairly new situation for me, but you always learn and develop mentally off the pitch as well.”
