Alexander Isak would have to wait for his dream shirt number if he joined Liverpool from Newcastle United this summer.

The Premier League champions have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, with reports on Wednesday night claiming they would be willing to smash the British transfer record to sign the forward.

The Sweden international has three years remaining on his current deal with the Magpies, which he signed when he moved from Real Sociedad to Newcastle United for £63m in 2022.

Earlier this month, it was reported in the national media that Newcastle have pencilled in talks with Isak over a new deal at St James' Park, with the possibility of him becoming the club's highest earner.

However, impending talks over his status on Tyneside have done little to cool the speculation on his future as he continues to be linked with moves to Liverpool and Arsenal.

As reported by the ECHO on Monday, Liverpool are huge fans of Isak but are well aware that he would cost at a considerable fee - at a time when the club are investing heavily in other positions.

After winning the Premier League last term, the Reds have wasted no time in the transfer market so far and have already agreed deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz of Bayern Leverkusen, while talks remain ongoing with Bournemouth over a deal to sign Milos Kerkez.

But if Isak were to move to Liverpool, he would have to wait for a potential departure to earn his favourite shirt number at Anfield.

Since making his professional debut for Swedish outfit AIK Fotboll in October 2016, Isak has worn the No.14 for the majority of his career.

After leaving Sweden to sign for Borussia Dortmund in 2017, the forward inherited the No.14 shirt with the Bundesliga outfit.

During his time at Dutch outfit Willem and later Real Sociedad, Isak wore the No.9 and then the No.19 shirts.

But when signing for Newcastle in 2022, Isak returned to the No.14 shirt and labelled the shirt as "iconic".

If Isak made the move to Anfield this summer and wanted to keep that number, he would have to wait for the No.14 shirt to become free.

As it stands, Federico Chiesa currently occupies that number, though the Italian is expected to leave Anfield this summer.
