In an effort to force the issue, Isak is reportedly refusing to play for the Magpies, a hardline stance that echoes his past.

When he left Borussia Dortmund for Real Sociedad, Isak made it clear he wouldn't be returning to the Westfalenstadion, even though the Bundesliga side held a buy-back clause.

"I have no intention of going back there," he said in 2020.

"All I can say is that Dortmund is in my past and not in my future.

In 2019, he was sold for just £5m to Real Sociedad, and it was there that his career truly ignited.

Isak not only scored 16 goals across all competitions in his debut campaign, but also played a pivotal role in delivering the Copa del Rey - the club's first major trophy in over three decades.

Unsurprisingly, talk of a return to Dortmund surfaced that summer, yet Isak was unwavering: he wasn't going back.

Newcastle have run into the same resolve this year, with the 25-year-old not only making his intentions clear but also going to extreme lengths to force through a transfer.

After Liverpool's opening £110m bid for the Swede was rejected earlier in the window, it emerged that Isak is refusing to play for the club and threatens to do so even if a move away doesn't materialise.

Since then, he has been training in isolation and was absent from the Magpies' Premier League opener against Aston Villa last weekend.

On Tuesday, he escalated matters further, dropping a bombshell statement on Instagram declaring that his relationship with Newcastle "cannot continue." The club, though, are showing plenty of Isak-esque resolve themselves.

Just hours later, Newcastle issued a firm retaliatory statement, doubling down on their not-for-sale stance and insisting that Isak will be reintegrated into the squad once his self-imposed exile ends.

Liverpool have indicated that they won't bid again unless Newcastle soften their demands, leaving the saga shrouded in uncertainty.

Having seemingly burned bridges with both his employers and their faithful, Isak is expected to keep pushing for a move to Anfield.
