Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak.

He is due to become the most expensive player in Premier League history, eclipsing Florian Wirtz following his £116m switch from Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the transfer window.

The Sweden international is set to sign a six-year contract at the Reds and take the club's summer spending to above £400m, after Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman arrived through the doors.

Should the deal get rubberstamped and finalised, as anticipated, then Isak has got to decide his shirt number for the 2025/26 campaign.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund man donned the No.14 at Newcastle but he might not get the chance to take that number with Federico Chiesa having that shirt right now.

However, there is one special number available for Isak at the moment.

Before Nunez, Roberto Firmino represented that number for eight years, while Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, Iago Aspas, Andy Carroll, Fernando Torres and Robbie Fowler were the six before that.

The shirt is also synonymous with Liverpool legend Ian Rush, who remains the club's all-time record goalscorer with 346 goals in all competitions.

At the start of August, Liverpool saw a flat £110m offer for Isak rejected by Newcastle and the nature of the response from Tyneside had been enough for the Reds to pause further negotiations.

But it's understood Newcastle's move for Nick Woltemade, which was confirmed on Friday, was the catalyst for the shift in attitude in the North East as senior officials softened on their previous £150m hardline stance over a big-money sale for Isak.

A deal is expected to go through before the deadline.

Slot hinted that Liverpool could be in for a chaotic deadline day following his side's 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

Liverpool remain interested in a deal for the Swede.

Meanwhile, Marc Guehi has been a player of interest all summer and Liverpool could still launch a last-minute deal for the Crystal Palace defender.
