Alexander Isak’s awkward response was very telling after Alan Shearer asked him about signing a long-term contract.

The relentless transfer rumours surrounding Isak have dominated headlines over the last month.

Few could have predicted that the Newcastle striker, who broke the club's trophy drought in March by netting the Carabao Cup final winner against Liverpool, would agitate this much to leave St James' Park this summer.

Amid the transfer rumours, Isak was left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia and became the subject of a £110million offer from Liverpool earlier this month, which was swiftly turned down.

Since then, the 25-year-old Swede has not trained with his team-mates and is refusing to play for Newcastle in a bid to engineer a dream switch to Anfield.

His conduct, which included issuing a statement where he claimed the club had "broken promises and trust," has drawn criticism from club icon Shearer and their fans.

Following reports that he made his position clear during discussions with Magpies hierarchy before Monday's 3-2 loss to Liverpool that he doesn't envisage his future on Tyneside, it seems Isak might well be departing before the transfer window closes.

That may not come as a surprise, however, despite the player still having three years left on his contract.

There had been some optimism last season that the Sweden international would pledge his long-term future to Newcastle by agreeing a contract extension.

However, during a BBC Sport interview with Shearer back in January, the Newcastle legend put Isak on the spot by saying: "We've seen recent big name centre-forwards sign long contracts..."

Isak nodded his head before breaking into a smile and awkwardly saying: “Yeah.” Shearer added: “You know what’s coming next.”

Yet, his response was quite revealing, refusing to commit his future to Newcastle at that moment.

“Yeah we’ll see, obviously you never know,” Isak said while avoiding eye contact.

It suggested that, even seven months ago, the forward in his head had begun considering his departure and perhaps already envisioned himself at another club.

He could now realise that ambition as Newcastle prepare to secure a replacement striker in 23-year-old German talent Nick Woltemade.
