Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United remains uncertain after he missed the club’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday, as speculation over a potential move to Anfield intensifies.
The 25-year-old striker has been training away from the first-team squad since sitting out Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia.
Reports suggest Isak has made it clear he does not wish to play for the Magpies again, although manager Eddie Howe insists the “door remains open” for his return.
Liverpool recently saw an initial £110million bid rejected by Newcastle and are yet to return with an improved offer.
The Magpies, meanwhile, are reluctant to sanction a sale until they have secured attacking reinforcements of their own.
In Isak’s absence, Anthony Gordon was deployed as a false nine against Villa, but Newcastle failed to find the net in a frustrating goalless draw.
With the transfer deadline approaching, the club is exploring other attacking options, including Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Paris Saint-Germain forward Gonçalo Ramos.
Amid the uncertainty, Isak has broken his silence on the transfer saga, taking to Instagram to share a post addressing the speculation surrounding his future.
“I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25,” he posted.
“First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who have supported me along the way.
I’m not at the ceremony tonight.
“With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.
I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken.
“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time.
To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue?
