Anthony Gordon is more than willing to continue as Newcastle United’s centre-forward - as he sent Liverpool a stern warning ahead of next week’s game.
Gordon was the man tasked with the lead for his side against Aston Villa on Saturday, as Alexander Isak was left out by Eddie Howe as he continues to try and force a move away from St James’ Park this summer.
The former Everton man could have done better with a header from Harvey Barnes’ cross before forcing Marco Bizot, playing instead of the suspended Emiliano Martinez, into a low save.
However, that was as good as it got for Gordon and his side, as they were forced to settle for a point on the opening weekend of the season.
And with Liverpool next up, the 24-year-old would relish the chance to continue to lead the line for his side in Isak’s absence.

“I like it,” he said.
It's a completely different position.
“My back is against the goal a lot, which as a winger you never have, but there's a certain part of it, like the move where Ant Elanga played me in, that's where I can really hurt people.
“I'm really good in certain areas; I just need to improve in some areas and that'll come with time.”

It has been a summer of upheaval for the Magpies, as Isak has trained alone ever since his side returned from a pre-season tour of the Far East.
The Sweden international is keen on a move to Liverpool, with the Reds having already seen a bid rejected.
The Chronicle is also reporting that the Magpies are pondering when to take disciplinary action, with the Sweden international now free from the groin injury that kept him out of the trip to the Far East in pre-season.
Eddie Howe also reiterated after the game at Villa Park that the door remains open for Isak to be reintegrated into the squad if he wants to be but knows only the player is in control.
But despite the ongoing saga with Isak, Gordon insists that his side remain a united group due to the unbreakable bond they have created.
“That's our main strength, our togetherness, and nothing's going to break that,” he said.
I think you've seen that today.

“It's been a difficult summer, and you wouldn't have thought it looking at us, the way we performed, so it's a testament to the staff and all the lads for keeping up.”
