Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has returned to train at his former club Real Sociedad's state-of-the-art Zubieta training facilities amid uncertainty over his future this summer. The 25-year-old Swedish forward did not accompany Newcastle on their pre-season tour of the Far East, citing a "minor thigh injury," but was able to make the journey to northern Spain where he is training individually with his staff while recovering.
Isak has reportedly informed Newcastle that he wishes to explore his options this transfer window, with Liverpool making an informal approach for the striker. However, Newcastle remain firm on their valuation, demanding a British record transfer fee of around £150 million if Isak is to be sold. His current contract runs until 2028, and the club is in no rush to sell unless an adequate replacement is found.
Real Sociedad, where Isak played from 2019 to 2022 before moving to Newcastle for a club-record £63 million, stands to benefit financially from any future transfer. They are entitled to 10% of any transfer fee above €70 million (£60.5m) and will also receive smaller solidarity payments.
Newcastle's efforts to replace Isak focus on targets such as 22-year-old RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Šeško, though they face competition from Manchester United for the Slovenian international. Other potential signings, like Yoane Wissa from Brentford, have been difficult to finalize.
Isak’s choice to train at Real Sociedad while Newcastle’s squad tours Asia has sparked some controversy among Newcastle supporters, as it is unusual for a player to train away from their current club during pre-season. Real Sociedad’s facilities are considered superior to Newcastle's Benton base, reflecting substantial recent investment.
