Alexander Isak is poised for talks with Newcastle United amid interest from Liverpool(Image: Getty Images)
The possibility of Alexander Isak moving to Anfield this summer still can't be ruled out despite Liverpool inching closer to signing Hugo Ekitike.
The Reds raised interest in Newcastle talisman Isak before shifting their attention to £79million Eintracht Frankfurt forward Ekitike, who is poised to undergo a medical ahead of his move.
Liverpool's interest in Isak has led to questions over his future in the northeast and whether Newcastle's Saudi owners would be right to cash in.
The Swede has another three years left to run on his contract, and The Athletic reported talks over a new deal are set to resume later this summer after the Magpies U-turned on negotiations over a pay rise around this time last year.
Speculation naturally increased after Isak was omitted from the Newcastle squad that lost 4-0 to Celtic in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
"And we may be close to finalising the next step for the player, without revealing any details regarding whether Isak will transfer or stay with Newcastle."
Isak was in line to receive a pay increase to his current £150,000-a-week earnings at Newcastle when talks were put off last summer.
But the club want to keep hold of their star man and are planning to go ahead with scheduled contract talks later this summer despite Liverpool's interest.

Isak remains a prime target for Arne Slot, although Liverpool are now closing in on Ekitike, a player who Newcastle were keen to sign themselves.
Although Slot had a slow first summer at the Anfield helm in terms of spending, he has made up for lost time after being crowned a Premier League champion.
The figure being mooted to sign Isak sits at around £120m, though Newcastle have appeared intent on keeping hold of the player at all costs.
