Liverpool has completed the British record signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United after an agreement worth around $169 million (£125 million) was struck between the sides over the weekend.

Isak will wear the number nine jersey at Liverpool, which was last held by Darwin Nunez, who moved to the Saudi Pro League outfit Al Hilal earlier this summer.

Isak wore the number 19 initially at Real Sociedad before switching to 14 at Newcastle.

The Swedish striker’s arrival on Merseyside brings an end to months of speculation surrounding Isak's future.

The 25-year-old had to force through a move away from Newcastle with club executives eventually relenting having initially blocked his exit.

He hasn't played for Newcastle since last season and has been forced to train away from the rest of Eddie Howe's squad in recent weeks.

The player criticized the club publicly on social media and claimed that promises were broken regarding his future

That led to Newcastle issuing a counter-statement in denial, but Isak has ended up getting the move he wanted.

Isak has penned a six-year contract with Liverpool

The deal is worth more than any other that has involved an English club, eclipsing the move for Florian Wirtz— worth up to $157 million (£116 million) — that was confirmed earlier this summer.
