Alexander Isak's goalless run at Liverpool was short-lived as he bagged a clinical effort against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Swede may still be getting used to his new colours but it was was a familiar sight to see him find the net and produce his trademark celebration.

Isak reacted quickly to finish first time from Federico Chiesa's pass inside the area on the verge of half-time and was able to wheel away and gesture behind him.

The former Newcastle striker, who completed a £125 million move late in the summer transfer window, then slid across the pitch on his knees, firing his arms towards a buoyant Anfield crowd.

It was just Isak's third outing for his new team having previously started against Atletico Madrid and featured from the bench against Everton having not participated in Newcastle's start to the season as he looked to force his move.

The striker was given little time to rest on his laurels as his half-time was spent completing sprints across the pitch, before he was replaced by Hugo Ekitike.

Liverpool's opposition meanwhile, were given 15 minutes to reflect on what had just happened.

The Saints looked set to take the lead just moments before Isak's strike as Adam Armstrong hit the bar with a left-footed shot.

More frustratingly for the visitors, Leo Scienza could only head wide when the goal looked to be waiting for him.

And in less than a minute, Liverpool were able to convert their own pressure.

"There are the players that need a game and we're happy that we have one," said Slot before the game.

"If we wouldn't have had one, we probably would have arranged a friendly in this week for these players because they need to play games as well to keep them ready whenever we need them.

"We've used quite a lot in the last three games because we thought we needed to keep this energy throughout all the three games – but not all of them.
