Liverpool picked up an important win over Newcastle United, but they remain in a tussle with their Premier League rivals for Alexander Isak.

The bitter saga for the Sweden international continues to drag on, with both clubs and the player facing a wait for a conclusion as the transfer deadline looms large.

The Reds have already seen one bid - worth a British record £110million - rejected and they may not return to the negotiation table unless they receive encouragement - as well as a willingness from the Magpies to sell.

Arne Slot relied on 16-year-old, Rio Ngumoha, to be the hero at St James' Park, but Liverpool find themselves facing the need for reinforcements.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have had a torrid summer in the transfer window after several set-backs in their pursuit of their transfer targets.

Eddie Howe's side continue to scour the market for additions and there is an added need for reinforcements for the next stage of the campaign - before the winter transfer window - as Anthony Gordon is set to serve a three-match ban for his red card against Liverpool.

The ECHO has taken a look at the latest transfer news surrounding Isak;

Newcastle have reportedly had a £55million bid rejected for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

It was the second time that the Magpies had been rebuffed in their approach for the Norwegian forward - a day after their opening offer of £50m.

Strand Larsen came on to be the hero for Wolves as he scored twice to help the club into the third round of the Carabao Cup after coming from behind to beat West Ham.

The Daily Mail have reported that they may engage in a third bid for the forward in their summer-long search for reinforcements.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle want two strikers before they entertain a new approach from Liverpool, for Isak, but the North East club have failed to get one name through the door in that area.

It was widely reported on Tuesday afternoon that Newcastle's efforts to reintegrate Isak into the first-team, and put an end to the saga, were in vain.

Jamie Reuben and representatives of the majority shareholders, Saudi Arabia's Private Investment Fund, met with Isak and his entourage in an attempt to move forward but reports suggest that he stuck to his guns, remaining on strike until he is granted a move to Liverpool.

The Guardian revealed that the striker was offered a lucrative pay rise, in exchange for a willingness to stay for at least one more season, however it has been said that the proposal offered little appeal.

Whether Liverpool sign Isak or move to other options has already been dismissed by Slot.

The Dutchman stated in the build-up to their Premier League showdown in the North East that he was happy with his attacking options if no further additions were made.

"It depends how you want to look at it," Slot said.
