Liverpool’s squad has touched down in Hong Kong for the opening leg of their summer tour, where they will face AC Milan on Saturday before moving on to Yokohama F?
Marinos in Japan.
Among the travelling party, one name remains conspicuous by his absence from full training sessions: Alexis Mac Allister, who continues his rehabilitation program away from the main group.
Mac Allister did not feature in Liverpool’s final two Premier League fixtures of the 2024–25 campaign, after the club decided to rest him as a precautionary measure following a niggling knock.
His fitness concerns carried over into the international break, with Argentina opting not to include him in their squad for their early June matches.
Two months on from his last appearance, the 26-year-old has still yet to join the squad’s on-pitch sessions in Hong Kong, but signs are increasingly positive.
Today (Tuesday), Mac Allister was spotted training outdoors under the supervision of Liverpool’s head of rehabilitation physiotherapy, Lee Nobes.
Clad in full training gear and working with a ball, he completed light drills on the turf – an encouraging step that suggests full team involvement is not far away.
His inclusion in the travelling squad, while peers Jayden Danns and James McConnell remained at the AXA to focus on fitness, means that that Mac Allister’s return to action could come imminently.
Whether Mac Allister will be deemed ready for the friendly against AC Milan remains uncertain, but the expectation is that he could at least take part in the subsequent fixture in Japan.
With Liverpool’s Premier League title defence not starting until August 15 at home to Bournemouth, there is ample time for him to regain full match fitness.
Assuming no setbacks, Mac Allister should be poised to resume his role in midfield ahead of the competitive season, bringing an end to a frustrating injury layoff.
