The Argentine midfielder was in the running to claim the award this week following a brilliant 2024/25 season.

Mac Allister helped the Reds to the Premier League title after a season in which he netted seven goals and notched six assists from the heart of midfield.

Unfortunately for him, that was not quite enough to see him named the best footballer in the world.

The midfielder eventually finished 22nd, albeit seemed relatively happy having shared his final placing on his Instagram story.

Mac Allister’s post came after he confirmed that he would not be attending Monday’s awards ceremony.

Taking to Instagram, he said: “Won’t be able to attend @ballondorofficial ceremony today for personal reasons, all the best for everyone, enjoy!"

While Mac Allister appeared pleased with his eventual placing, one man that might not have been too enamoured is Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.

In the aftermath, Liverpool praised the forward as posted a series of images of the Egyptian forward on their official Instagram with the caption: “A season to savour from Salah,” alongside a red heart.

The post was liked by his current team-mates Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Ryan Gravenberch, as well as his former colleague Luis Diaz.

And while Mac Allister has yet to comment, his feelings on Salah are very clear.

Speaking earlier this season, he said: “Mo, he’s hilarious.

Now I have to really work out.’”

Both Mac Allister and Salah will certainly be keen to make an impact this week as Liverpool turn their attention back to their on-pitch commitments.
