The transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot has been a smooth one for Liverpool so far, with the new head coach picking up where his predecessor left off.
Having taken over from Klopp during the summer, Slot has won seven of his eight games in charge so far, and has guided the Reds to the top of the Premier League, while also making a perfect start to their Champions League campaign and Carabao Cup defense.
Even the most optimistic of Liverpool fans might not have expected the handover to be so smooth following Klopp’s reign, which transformed the fortunes of the club as they climbed back to the top of the tree in English football, while also becoming European and world champions.
But, bar a disappointing off-day against Nottingham Forest, the Reds have maintained the high levels set by Klopp, with Slot arguably even improving on some aspects – most notably their defensive efforts, boasting four clean sheets so far.
Alexis Mac Allister has been an almost ever-present for Slot so far, having been signed under Klopp’s tutelage last year and going on to play a vital role in the German’s final season.
He is therefore qualified to assess the differences over the past 12 months, although when it comes to his own position in midfield, there isn’t too much to discuss.
“Between Arne and Jurgen the principles are the same,” Mac Allister said ahead of the Champions League clash with Bologna.
Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp.
“At the same time, we are just talking about Ryan (Gravenberch), Dom (Szoboszlai) and me but we also have amazing players like Curtis (Jones), Harvey (Elliott) and (Wataru) Endo and that's what you want.”
Klopp certainly left plenty of quality for his successor – and not just in midfield.
The Reds’ attacking options are the envy of many of their rivals, especially with Luis Diaz starting the season in sparkling form.
The Colombian is just one of the players thriving under Slot’s guidance, having scored five goals so far this season to leave him just three off his league tally from the previous campaign.
