Alexis Mac Allister has had some spare time on his hands having not been called up to the Argentina team this June
The Liverpool midfielder was forced to sit out World Cup qualifying matches against both Chile and Colombia this month, following his exclusion from both his club’s season finale and international duty due to a persistent minor injury.
Mac Allister missed Liverpool’s final two Premier League matches of their title-winning campaign, with manager Arne Slot explaining that the 26-year-old needed to “recover completely” from what he described as “not a big injury, but something to take a risk with”.
The midfielder had played 3,569 minutes across 49 appearances during the season, making him Liverpool’s fourth most-used player.
Despite understanding the medical reasoning, Mac Allister expressed significant frustration at his international omission:
“Not being on the [squad] list infuriates me.
He acknowledged having “some issues throughout the year” but emphasized it was “not a major injury, it’s a minor one”.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed that Mac Allister “was on the list” but decided jointly with the player that rest was necessary, particularly with the 2026 World Cup approaching.
As a result, the Liverpool No.10 has been conducting plenty of interviews since the campaign has ended.
The 26-year-old recently spoke to Argentine media, with TNT Sports sharing his comments.
When questioned about which player he would like to see join Liverpool, Mac Allister immediately named Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero:
“Oh, Cuti [Romero].
He’s a player I love,” he said.
“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy.
He gives me confidence?
For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for several years,” Mac Allister explained.
The pair have been regular for Argentina over the past few years and won the World Cup together in 2022.
It’s believed that Romero could be on the move this summer, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy attempting to tie down the defender on a new deal according to reports.
