Jurgen Klopp oversaw a vast overhaul of the Liverpool side after becoming the Reds’ manager in 2015, so here are all of the German’s signings ranked from worst to best.

The Merseyside team appointed Klopp as the manager of Liverpool in October 2015 as their replacement for Brendan Rodgers. He took over at Anfield after a brief break from the game upon leaving Borussia Dortmund. Reds chiefs would then back Klopp to win Liverpool titles.

And win titles he did with Klopp adding honour after honour to Liverpool’s trophy cabinet at Anfield. The German won his first major trophy on Merseyside with the 2018/19 Champions League. Klopp also won the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup before revealing his exit.

Klopp confirmed in January 2024 that he would leave his role as the manager of Liverpool at the end of that season. He also added more silverware to Liverpool’s trophy record after the decision with the 2023/24 EFL Cup, while even fighting to win a second Premier League title.

News of Klopp deciding to resign early from a contract lasting to June 2026 also made Ryan Gravenberch his final Liverpool signing. Marko Grujic was also Klopp’s first Liverpool signing in January 2016. So, with that in mind, here are all of Klopp’s signings for Liverpool, ranked…

Newcastle United suffering relegation from the Premier League opened a door for Klopp and Liverpool to sign Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman swapped St James’ Park for Anfield in a £25m transfer in July 2016. He would go on to become an essential presence under Klopp.

Wijnaldum offered Liverpool an all-action option Klopp could consistently rely on through to the midfielder’s departure in June 2021. He played a total of 237 times at the Reds including 179 in the Premier League – with Wijnaldum never featuring in fewer than 33 league games.

The Rotterdam native’s name is also etched in Liverpool’s history through Wijnaldum’s brace off the bench to beat FC Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final second-leg at Anfield. But his greatest strength was doing the work that allowed other players to shine.

Klopp did not let Hull City enduring relegation from the Premier League stop Liverpool from signing Andrew Robertson in July 2017. The left-back avoided falling into the Championship for an initial fee of £8m. His bargain transfer even only featured a further £3m with add-ons.

Robertson would prove to be a transformative signing, not only for Klopp and Liverpool but how the left-back position was viewed. While the Scot has rarely been the best defender at Anfield, the Reds have relished teams seldom challenging them to exploit his offensiveness.

Teams fearing Liverpool’s attack leave spaces for Robertson to occupy and create chances in. The Glasgow native’s stamina also sees him track back and recover from rampaging runs up the channel. But Robertson’s greatest asset for Liverpool has always been his creativity.

Klopp signing Fabinho from AS Monaco for an initial £39.5m, rising to £44m after add-ons, in May 2018 was transformative for Liverpool. The Brazilian changed the Reds’ world after giving the German one of the best holding midfielders around Europe at his absolute peak.

Fabinho brought balance to a team rocked by losing the 2017/18 Champions League final to Real Madrid. He also offered the Merseyside natives the perfect defensive shield who would soak up any pressure. His work was also instrumental to how Liverpool played in possession.

The Campinas native’s signing was not an instant hit for Klopp but Fabinho grew into his role at Liverpool. And once he got comfortable at Anfield, there was no looking back until his last season decline. The ruthless 6 ft 2 star was the Reds’ long-sought Javier Mascherano heir.

Klopp may have signed the greatest-ever Liverpool goalkeeper when he raided AS Roma for Alisson Becker in July 2018. The Reds bet beg to bring the Brazilian to Merseyside for £67m. The transfer made Alisson the most expensive shot-stopper of all time… albeit for 21 days.

Alisson has since proven to be the reliable cog in the Liverpool line-up that never wilts. The Novo Hamburgo native has come up clutch countless times, including scoring against West Bromwich Albion whilst chasing a top-four finish. But his saves have made Alisson a legend.

Liverpool rest easy with Alisson between the sticks as he often makes incredible stops. From his heroics against SSC Napoli to keep the club in a Champions League season they went on to win in 2018/19 to three saves in four seconds at Norwich City, he stands up for Liverpool.

Klopp had tracked Sadio Mane since the 2012 Olympics and finally got his man in June 2016. Liverpool agreed to a £34m deal with Southampton to make the winger the most expensive African player at the time. It proved to be a very cunning investment for a future Reds hero.

Mane won it all at Anfield before moving to Bayern Munich for an initial £27.5m, plus £7.5m in add-ons, in June 2022. The Senegal sensation also scored 120 goals and assisted a further 47 in 269 games. He never scored fewer than 10 times in any Premier League season, either.

Klopp relished signing Mane with 90 goals in 196 top-flight matches for an average of 15 per campaign. The attacker even scored on his Reds debut and jumped on Klopp’s back to mark the start of their fruitful relationship. Mane was also never afraid to get stuck in defensively.

An ACL injury may have limited his powers but Virgil van Dijk was the best defender around Europe for a long time after signing for Liverpool under Klopp. The Reds even made him the most expensive defender ever when arriving from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m.

It was a transfer a long time coming having tried to force through the move in the previous summer. But Van Dijk was more than worth the wait for Liverpool’s fans as he transformed their fortunes. Few forwards would even dare to try and dibble around the Dutch enforcer.

At his peak, Van Dijk was everything Liverpool needed in a defender as he gave them a truly imposing presence. His impact also extended to the other end of the field with Van Dijk one of the most prolific defenders. The centre-half also became an immense captain in 2023/24.

Klopp agreed his greatest signing as the manager of Liverpool in June 2017 when Mohamed Salah joined from AS Roma. The forward quit the Stadio Olimpico for £34m and became the Egyptian King at Anfield. Klopp had made Salah his prime target for Liverpool that summer.

Salah had struggled during his first taste of the Premier League whilst on Chelsea’s books in west London. Yet Salah became the talisman of Liverpool’s attack and burst out of the gates on Merseyside. He scored 32 goals and assisted 10 during 36 top-flight matches in 2017/18.

Anfield has continued to revel in Salah’s mastery with brilliant goals and bamboozling talent running down the wing. He has given Liverpool everything that Klopp wanted when signing Salah. His numbers also make Salah a true living Liverpool legend with more than 200 goals.
