Thankfully, defensive reinforcements appear to be on the way, with the club sealing a £26 million deal for Italian centre back Giovanni Leoni earlier in the week and England’s Marc Guéhi strongly linked with a late-window move to Merseyside.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent, Paul Gorst, for his thoughts on the Guéhi transfer.

Paul said:
“It was interesting to listen to Steve Parish in the mixed zone at Wembley, and he basically admitted that Marc Guéhi was for sale, as was Ebere Eze, so no surprise that Liverpool have made the move.
“Liverpool have waited and seen what price Palace would be willing to drop to, and considering they rejected offers of £60-65 million last year for Guéhi, there’s talk of it being now between £30-40 million, which is good news for Liverpool.
“Liverpool desperately needs a senior established centre-back, and Marc Guéhi coming in at the age of 25 -an England international – will certainly provide that.
“It’s a big deal for Liverpool, and it’s one who’s going to improve the squad, certainly at centre-back, immeasurably.
“I don’t think he’s going to be coming in immediately as a plan B or a back-up or anything like that.
I think he’s going to be a real high-quality competition for a place.
“The money that Liverpool are going to get him for is a steal, really in this day and age.
“They have sounded out his willingness to move, and there has been a bit of a thumbs-up on that one, but they’re yet to discuss the bottom line over what he’s going to name.
“All being well, they will reach that agreement eventually with Palace and he’ll become a Liverpool player before the window closes.”

REDMEN REACTS
Friday night’s barnstormer against Bournemouth continued one of the themes of preseason – Liverpool look excellent going forward but worryingly vulnerable at the back, especially when being countered.
The addition of Marc Guéhi would be a welcome one for many fans, especially given the injury record of Joe Gomez and the inexperience of new signing Giovanni Leoni.
Guéhi was considered by many pundits to be England’s best defender on their run to the final of Euro 2024, so to pick up a player with such a track record and a great deal of Premier League experience for a potentially cut price looks like a very shrewd piece of business.
