‘Almost impossible’: Ally McCoist isn't having what he is hearing about Liverpool and Arne Slot

Below is a summary of the full article. Click here for the full version or go back to LFC Live.net

You just wonder how much Arne Slot will be taking and digesting from these current Liverpool performances.

For many, Jurgen Klopp’s side have unexpectedly collapsed and booted themselves out of the Premier League title race.

Added to that, Liverpool also suffered a shock Europa League exit and somehow couldn’t beat an abject Manchester United side in the FA Cup.

Arne Slot could have walked into Anfield with the team winning several trophies before Klopp’s exit.

But now, it’s only the League Cup he will be departing with, but he deserves a lot more and this is where the players are to blame.

Regardless of what happens in the title race between Arsenal and Manchester City in these coming weeks, you just know the two will be at it again next season.

It’s just a question of if any other team, namely Liverpool, can join them.

Is it fair to be asking Slot to challenge or win the title in his first campaign?

It’s not the norm and it’s not like he is going to spend Chelsea-like money where you expect so much from him.

Added to that, you just don’t know what senior players will depart at the end of the season.

The future of Mohamed Salah is a big one.

That’s why Ally McCoist was quick to shut down claims that Slot will win the title in his first season.

The former striker highlighted why it simply won’t happen and stated that it’s ‘almost impossible’, as he told talkSPORT.

“Not just Holland, you can include Portugal and places like that, I would think, to the detriment of young British coaches, to be quite honest with you,” said McCoist on the quality of Dutch coaches.

“I don’t know what he is going to be like.

I think it’s rather a sweeping statement to say that he will win the title in his first season at Liverpool, particularly when you don’t know what’s going to happen at Liverpool.

“There might be an exodus of one or two star players, and if that is the case, then you have to say it’s going to be extremely difficult for them and for him to come in and win the league in his first season.

The uncertainty surrounding Liverpool, I think it would be almost impossible for them to say ‘you fancy them to win the league’, especially with the way they ended.”

You feel keeping certain players, from Salah to Virgil van Dijk, is probably going to be as important as who comes in.

There needs to be some freshness added to the team.

The backline needs addressing and so do the forward areas.

Salah staying and Diogo Jota staying out of the treatment room should be some of Slot’s biggest wishes because they provide reliability in the final third.

But whilst many talk about the attack and how it’s lacking, the defence has also had issues and a number of defensive options need to come in via the summer transfer market.
