Russell Martin is set to face a visit from Andrew Cavenagh as Rangers continue to recover from embarrassment in the Champions League.

The healthcare tycoon has led a joint-49ers Enterprises‘ takeover at Ibrox, with help from Paraag Marathe, but just months into the new era the owners have been left with a difficult decision on their hands.

Martin has been vocal about the unwavering support from those behind the scenes despite his difficult start to life in Scotland, having won just 33 per cent of his games since taking charge in June.

Football Insider understands that the Rangers boss is unlikely to be sacked if he manages to beat Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday, 31 August.

No pressure, then.

If that wasn’t bad enough already, the former Southampton boss is set to go face-to-face with Cavenagh at Auchenhowie training ground before the showdown at Ibrox.

Writing on BBC Sport (29 August), Tom English said: “In words that might come as a kick to the solar plexus of his legions of critics, Martin said he has spoken to club owner and chairman, Andrew Cavenagh, and that he has his support.

“On Saturday, he’ll feel his presence as Cavenagh is planning a visit to the training centre.

On Sunday, the pair of them are likely to experience just how incendiary Ibrox can be.

If Cavenagh isn’t aware of it now, he’s in for a fright.”

Football Insider verdict

If recent history is anything to go by, the Light Blues have an incredible chance of claiming victory against their Old Firm rivals this weekend.

The Gers have won two of the last three meetings, with the last one ending in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox thanks to goals from Cyriel Dessers and Swansea City-bound Adam Idah.

Hamza Igamane has also played an enormous role in recent meetings, but with the 22-year-old’s move to Ligue 1 giants Lille now confirmed, Martin will need to turn to different figures.

The manager is quickly running out of time to prove that he is the person to lead Rangers into this new era, especially with fans quickly turning on him already.

Three games without a win in the Scottish Premiership have seen them fall six points behind Celtic, who are yet to even concede a goal against St Mirren, Aberdeen, and Livingston.

However, not all is rosy for Brendan Rodgers‘ side, who were also knocked out of the Champions League by Kazakhstan first division side Kairat Almaty during the week.
