It’s not every day you see a former England international pop up in the sixth tier of English football.

But that’s what’s happening.

And for fans who remember his towering headers and physical presence up front, this move might come as a surprise.

Still, it’s a reminder that every player’s journey is different.

Some chase trophies, others chase minutes.

For Andy Carroll, it’s all about playing again, and playing close to home.

Carroll has had one of the more unpredictable careers among English strikers.

He burst onto the scene with Newcastle United, where his form earned him a £35 million move to Liverpool in January 2011.

That fee made him the most expensive British player at the time.

Things never fully clicked at Anfield, though he did score key goals, including one in the FA Cup final.

After Liverpool, he went on to West Ham, where he had a longer and more consistent run, though injuries often held him back.

He later returned to Newcastle and then had spells at Reading and West Brom.

In 2023, he made an unexpected move abroad to Amiens in France’s second division, before switching to Bordeaux in the fourth tier last season.

Now, the 36-year-old has signed a free transfer deal with Dagenham & Redbridge, a club in National League South, as confirmed via the Club’s official site.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carroll explained why, “It doesn’t matter the level, or anything, as long as I get on the pitch and play football, that’s all that matters.”

He added, “Clubs [were] ringing me up from higher leagues,” but said that the most important thing was finding the “right fit.”

Carroll also addressed those questioning his motivations, “Coming here and showing people I am just playing for the love of football rather than the money and the level is something I wanted to do.”

And on what’s next, he hinted at ambition beyond the sixth tier, “This is something which could be fantastic.”

”We have a project to get them out of non-league and back up the leagues.”

For Liverpool fans, this move is another twist in a career full of them.

Carroll might not have become a legend at Anfield, but he was part of an era, and he’s still writing new chapters.
