It’s no doubt a quirk rather than a strategy, but Liverpool have multiple stars who play their international football for relatively uncelebrated nations.

Nor is this a trait limited to Jürgen Klopp’s African contingent: Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are stand-outs for Scotland and Greece respectively, but both face a common problem when on international duty.

For Liverpool, it is a challenge just to get minutes at all — but unlike Greece and Scotland, Klopp will not consider solving this problem with a novel centre-back solution.

Mohamed Salah is the undisputed greatest ever Egypt player, Sadio Mané has a claim to the equivalent title for Senegal, and Joël Matip would still comfortably be Cameroon’s best player if he opted to accept a call-up from his country.

For Scotland, it is hard to dispute that the two best players are Robertson and Kieran Tierney; an unfortunate situation, given they share the same position.

For Scotland, Robertson provided two assists in a vital win over Israel.

While not as high-profile as Robertson and Tierney, Tsimikas and Dimitris Giannoulis are in essentially the exact same situation as their Scottish counterparts.
