And the long-serving left-back has welcomed the challenge that Milos Kerkez will bring if the club are able to bring the £45m-rated Bournemouth defender in this summer transfer window.

Robertson, who joined from Hull City for around £8m in 2017, is now into the final year of his deal on Merseyside at the age of 31, and sporting director Richard Hughes is currently in talks with his Bournemouth counterpart Simon Francis over a deal for 21-year-old Kerkez.

As part of a charity golf day for his AR26 foundation, Robertson, who was speaking to Sky Sports News at the Gleneagles Hotel, confirmed tentative talks are underway over his deal.

"We have discussed it, of course we have," Robertson said.

"You know the club have been...

I never have done that so I am not going to start doing that now.

"I know the position I am in and I have only got a year left and a lot is getting spoken about and getting said but my full focus is, you know, focusing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.

"Then I will try to come back in the best possible shape for pre-season and then we'll see what the future holds when these decisions come."

On the club's pursuit of Kerkez, Robertson added: "I think at any big club you always have to keep moving, the club always moves forward and I think you've also seen other big clubs like Manchester City have been very active early doors in the window.

"I know we've only got Jeremie Frimpong through the door so far but it looks as though one or two others are going to be close from what we can see on Sky Sports News.

But just now we're at the top, we obviously won the league, and it's important that the club keeps improving and finding ways to do that.

"The club have identified certain positions where they want to get new blood in, it looks like younger players we're linked to are all younger players and they are all exciting players as well.

"So when you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect competition and I have always faced that, everyone here has faced that in their own positions and I expect nothing less.

"I want the club to be ambitious, they are doing that and wherever we fit into that, if we're happy with our role, we stay and we do it and if not then I am sure there will be a few out the door as well.

But you know, that's the nature of football and it's one of the biggest clubs in the world and we keep moving."

The Scotland captain also talked up the ability of transfer target Florian Wirtz, who the Reds remain locked in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over.

A £100m offer has been tabled for the Germany international, with conversations ongoing about the value of add-ons to take the deal north of £114m, which was offered earlier this month.

"He was excellent against us (when Scotland played Germany at last summer's European Championship), I do remember that and I remember that game was extremely tough for us," Robertson said.

"He was excellent, he was the one causing us problems, in the half-spaces, running in behind, so I haven't seen too much of him but I have played against him and that was enough for me to see he was going to be a top player.

"Obviously we (Liverpool) played Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League as well and we dominated that game a bit more (won 4-0) and made it difficult but certainly in the German team against us, he was excellent.

"We're certainly linked with him, that is for sure, you can't miss it and not see it.

And that suited us perfectly last season but now there is expectation.

"We were No.1 last season and our fans expect us to be No.1 again next season, as they do every season, and there will be a lot more expectation.

"So it is up to us to manage that, deal with that and I think we have the mentality in the squad to do that.
