The Reds have had a hugely exciting summer in the transfer market and fans would have hoped that this success would have translated onto the pitch, but this did not exactly happen.

Granted, Liverpool ground out a result and got the win against Bournemouth, but they were certainly very lucky to do so.

Arne Slot’s side looked good going forward but were very exposed at the back, with both of the Cherries’ goals coming from counter-attacks.

The new signings, bar Hugo Ekitike, also failed to impress and Dietmar Hamann even believed that two of them were the reason why Liverpool struggled to control the game.

One new star in particular had a tricky first game for the Reds and Liverpool fans have been quick to question him, but Andy Robertson is the prime example of why they just need to be a little patient.

Robertson has been one of the best left-backs in the world for many years now, with fans hoping that he can now pass the baton on to Milos Kerkez as he enters the twilight of his career.

The 21-year-old was a hugely exciting signing this summer as he set the league alight at Bournemouth last season, with many believing that he is the perfect heir to Robertson’s throne.

However, a lacklustre debut left fans a little disappointed, with the Hungarian just seeming a little over-keen to impress.

But, if Robertson’s first season is anything to go by, then fans need to give Kerkez some time, as even the Scotsman took some time to adjust.

On this day in 2017, the Scotsman actually made his debut in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, a game which would be considered a decent, but sub-par, first outing.

With that said, Robertson then struggled to impress when Alberto Moreno returned from injury and he was even left out of the squad entirely in nine of their next 12 games.

Jurgen Klopp’s reasoning for this was because he believes the left-back still had a lot to learn and was adapting to Liverpool’s style of play, something that clearly benefitted him as he has gone on to be a star.

By no means should Slot go as drastic as Klopp did and leave the left-back out of the squad completely, but it might be worth giving Robertson a few games while he settles down.

Liverpool face Newcastle and Arsenal before the international break, two massive games that could heavily impact the season already.

So, with Kerkez a little rash in the opening game, using Robertson’s experience in these two might be the way forward, giving the Hungarian more time to settle in and learn from one of the best.

Then, after the international break and with plenty of rest, the 21-year-old could be integrated into the starting XI against Burnley, a game that should suit him a lot more.

Of course, judging him after just one game is rather harsh and even if he started against Newcastle, there is still a good chance he performs, with his manager last season, Andoni Iraola, labelling him as a ‘quality’ player.

Liverpool just need to give him time, with the overall message being that Kerkez is by no means the finished product, which should be more of an exciting prospect rather than a negative.
