But the defender, who scored in Scotland's 2-1 victory over Cyprus on Saturday, was forced to pull out of the game with a hamstring injury.

"He didn't surprise me," said the Scotland boss.

The 21-year-old Kilmarnock left-back came in to replace injured skipper Robertson for the toughest of tough European Championship qualifiers in Brussels.

Robertson was expected to skipper the Scots in their 2020 European Championship qualifier and had taken part in pre-match media duties for that encounter.

It proved to be a huge blow for new manager Clarke, who missed his star man's presence as Belgium romped to a comfortable victory.

It was a big ask for him but I know his temperament, I know his character.
